A goal scored against Porto persuaded the club to sign him, and he later featured on and off for the 2004 Champions League winners.

After departing Porto he played for Braga, Benfica and Gil Vicente, earning one international cap along the way.

Wolves will be his ninth managerial post, his coaching career having started at Portuguese second-tier side Varzim.

At Gil Vicente he first kept the team in the top flight, then in his first full season led them to sixth in the Portuguese top division.

His move to Wolves marks the first time he has played or managed a competitive fixture for a club outside Portugal.
