New York City FC have loaned defensive midfielder James Sands to Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli. The 24 year old U.S. international is going to go out on loan until the summer of 2025, with St. Pauli having the option to extend that loan. With New York City, Sands has 143 career games played and won MLS Cup 2021.
A few seasons ago, New York City did something similar and loaned Sands to Scottish Premier League club Rangers FC. Sands had some initial success with Rangers before some internal shifts at the club changing his path there. With Rangers, Sands made 41 appearances and won a Scottish Cup. He now gets his second bite at the European apple with a shot to help St. Pauli avoid relegation this season. I am sad to see Sands go, but I am wishing him nothing but the best of luck at his European dreams/goals!
