The World Cup final on 19 July will be shown free in Central Park, with a mass screening planned on the Great Lawn.

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani said the event would admit 50,000 New Yorkers, adding that fans should not have to spend thousands of dollars to watch the match.

The Democratic mayor also set out a day-long programme, including a FIFA mini arena, organised tournaments and open-play matches.

The plan aims to turn the tournament into a shared public celebration across the city.

Attendance will be decided by lottery.
