Newcastle United claimed a dramatic late win over Fulham as captain Bruno Guimaraes struck in the final minute to seal a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park today.

The hosts looked set to drop points for the third time in four league games before the Brazilian midfielder reacted quickest to a rebound from Bernd Leno, firing home from close range to rescue all three points.

Guimaraes’ strike capped a tense afternoon in which Newcastle had seen their early lead cancelled out by Sasa Lukic’s header midway through the second half.

Jacob Murphy had earlier put Eddie Howe’s side in front after pouncing on Calvin Bassey’s mistake, dispossessing him before driving into the box and finishing clinically past Leno.

The winger, who has kept big-money signing Anthony Elanga out of the starting line-up, continued to look sharp down the right flank.

Nick Woltemade struck the post early on, while Anthony Gordon caused constant problems for Fulham’s defence. However, Newcastle failed to take control, and Marco Silva’s side grew in confidence.

The visitors equalised when substitute Kevin’s teasing cross from the left was met by Raul Jimenez, whose volley hit the bar before Lukic headed in the rebound ahead of Sven Botman.

The Dutch defender’s attempt to clear left him nursing a cut head and forced Howe into changes.

Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Fabian Schar were introduced to lift the tempo, but Fulham continued to threaten through Kevin’s direct runs.

Newcastle’s frustration deepened when Guimaraes missed a close-range header from Gordon’s cross.

However, substitute William Osula forced Leno into a save late in the game and Guimaraes was there to sweep in the winner, sparking relief around St James’ Park.

The result gave Newcastle consecutive wins following their Champions League triumph over Benfica and lifted them into the top half of the table.
