Newcastle United considered a move to bring Josh Acheampong to St James’ Park before they eventually signed Malick Thiaw (h/t journalist Fabrizio Romano).
The Magpies wanted to reinforce their defence, and Acheampong was on their shortlist after breaking out at Chelsea last season.
He impressed with his reading of the game, composure and ability to drive into the midfield with the ball.
Acheampong made 14 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, bagging one assist. He would have been a terrific addition to the Newcastle ranks.
Newcastle were not the only club showing interest in the 19-year-old.
Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace were tracking Acheampong’s progress, but Chelsea didn’t want to let him go.
Newcastle shelled out big money to sign Thiaw, who has struggled to break into the starting XI.
Manager Eddie Howe prefers his trusted pair of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.
However, with Burn and Schar entering the twilight of their career, Newcastle should consider revisiting a deal for Acheampong.
He has only started one Premier League game for Chelsea this season, and considering their options at the back, he will likely struggle for playing time.
Newcastle should seize this opportunity and step up their interest in Acheampong.
He is a complete athlete who can dominate defensively, and he is also incredible on the ball.
Newcastle’s recruitment team should be keeping a close eye on how Acheampong’s situation unfolds at Stamford Bridge.
If Chelsea open the door in future windows, the Magpies would be wise to make another approach.
Acheampong fits the long-term profile that Newcastle need as they continue to build a squad capable of challenging at the very top.
