Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has had it rough with injuries over the past few months, but thankfully, he is working his way back to full fitness.

The Newcastle left-back impressed as the England Under-21s claimed a hard-fought win over the Republic of Ireland yesterday.

The 21-year-old helped keep a clean sheet and provided attacking thrust for the Young Lions down the left flank.

While Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been easing him into the action, he was thrown straight into the deep end on international duty and thrived.

Hall won 6/11 duels against Ireland, making three clearances and winning the penalty for the opener.

“Hall played like a player who had a point to prove,” the Daily Mail said.

“Not just to himself, or Carsley, but also to Tuchel, who will receive a glowing report card on the Newcastle United full-back.”

Hall was “the best player on the night for England.” He offered England manager Thomas Tuchel a timely reminder of his ability.

Tuchel knows him from his Chelsea days and should be aware that when fit, he is arguably the best option on the flank.

Nico O’Reilly has impressed in the role, but Hall can give the Manchester City ace and Djed Spence a run for their money.

However, Newcastle must still be cautious with Hall. His recent injury issues mean he cannot be rushed back into the intensity of Premier League football.

Howe’s measured approach has been sensible, and the club will have to continue reintegrating him gradually to avoid any relapse.

The temptation to throw him straight in after such an eye-catching international performance will be strong, but protecting his long-term fitness is far more important.

If handled correctly, Hall can become a key pillar on the left flank for years to come, but the next few weeks will be crucial.

Newcastle need to manage his minutes carefully and resist overloading him as he builds back to full sharpness.
