Newcastle draw in Paris but both sides out of the top eight

Both Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain finished outside the top eight of the Champions League first phase after a hard-fought draw in France.

A difficult start to the game saw Newcastle give away a penalty that was saved before eventually falling behind to the defending champions a few minutes later.

The handball decision was perhaps a harsh one on Lewis Miley who could do little to move his arm out of the way. One person's arms who were deliberately in the way were those of Nick Pope who did brilliantly well to get down low and deny Ousmane Dembélé.

Despite that it was 1-0 in the eighth minute as the Magpies criminally allowed Vitinha to have space on the edge of the area and the Portuguese midfielder took full advantage.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was awarded with the assist for that goal but he had to be replaced midway through the half through injury with Désiré Doué taking his place.

Against the run of play, Newcastle drew level just before half-time after Sandro Tonali's free-kick delivery from deep eventually found Joe Willock to nod in from close range.

Both teams really needed to win this to make sure they had their fate in their own hands and Harvey Barnes missed a glorious chance late on for the Magpies.

Instead neither side made the final eight and will have to progress via the play-offs.
