Newcastle United claimed a 2-1 win over Manchester City at St James’ Park yesterday thanks to a double from Harvey Barnes.
The Magpies were desperate to end a run of successive league losses and got the job done against dangerous opposition.
Newcastle came prepared to end their abysmal run against Pep Guardiola’s side. They took the bull by the horns to earn three crucial points and climb up to 14th.
Several Newcastle players produced terrific performances, including Malick Thiaw.
He won all of his tackles, made one interception, six recoveries, seven clearances, and blocked one shot. He also came out on top in 2/4 duels.
Thiaw commented on Instagram after the game, and teammate Nick Woltemade responded ‘quality’ to the post. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes added ‘what a player’ to the thread.
Thiaw played a crucial role in the win and will be excited to see his teammates acknowledge his part.
Newcastle must treat this performance as a springboard to tackle a brutal run of fixtures.
Everton, Marseille, Tottenham Hotspur, Burnley, Bayer Leverkusen, Sunderland, and four more games all land within the next month.
The schedule will test their squad depth, resilience and mentality.
Momentum has been missing during their recent slump, but this result provides exactly the injection of belief they needed.
The defensive grit shown by Thiaw, the clinical edge from Barnes, and the collective intensity across the pitch must now become the standard.
If Newcastle can bottle the courage and composure they displayed at St James’ Park, this victory could become the catalyst that turns their season around.
