Newcastle were thrashed by Barcelona at Camp Nou to exit the Champions League at the round of 16 stage.

Eddie Howe’s side capitulated at the start of the second half as Barcelona eased through to the quarter finals at Newcastle’s expense with a 7-2 win on the night and 8-3 aggregate victory.

Newcastle found themselves trailing by only one goal at half-time, with Anthony Elanga twice equalising for the visitors after goals from Raphinha and Marc Bernal.

But Lamine Yamal put his side in front on the verge of half-time from the penalty spot after Kieran Tripper had pulled back Raphinha.

Barcelona then put the tie to bed at the start of the second half, with Fermin Lopez’s strike and a double from Robert Lewandowski putting the Spanish side 6-2 up on the night and 7-3 ahead on aggregate.

Raphinha added his second on 72 minutes to make matters worse for Newcastle, who will have to move on quickly with a Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland next up.
