Newcastle leave it late to beat Millwall at The Den | OneFootball

Newcastle United survived a scare at Millwall as Joe Willock’s late goal secured a 1-0 win and a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Matthias Jaissle named a strong side at The Den, but Newcastle struggled to turn their possession into clear chances. Willock tested Filip Marschall early on, while Sven Botman headed a corner onto the roof of the net.

Millwall grew into the game after the break and came close to taking the lead. Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček had to react quickly to prevent an own goal, before substitute Taïryk Arconte struck the post after capitalising on Tino Livramento’s mistake.

The hosts were made to pay for that miss in the 81st minute. Lewis Hall drilled a low cross into the box and Willock found space to turn the ball beyond Marschall and finally break Millwall’s resistance.

The Championship side pushed for an equaliser late on, but Newcastle held firm to maintain Jaissle’s unbeaten start and book their place in the last 16.
