Newcastle plot move for Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek | OneFootball

Newcastle United have added Sporting Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek to their shortlist as they continue their search for a new No.1, according to Sky Sports.

The Magpies are assessing several options between the posts after seeing long-term target James Trafford edge towards a Premier League rival.

Hornicek has now emerged as a serious candidate for Newcastle.

The 24-year-old Czech Republic international reportedly has a £30 million release clause in his contract and is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.

Newcastle are yet to submit an official offer, but they have made enquiries as they weigh up a potential move, per other reports.

Hornicek has enhanced his reputation over the past year.

The Newcastle target kept 12 clean sheets in 33 league appearances last season. His goals-prevented stat line was an impressive +3.81.

Hornicek managed seven shut-outs in 14 Europa League appearances. All in all, he recorded 24 clean sheets in 55 appearances.

He recently produced another impressive display as his side secured a 1-0 victory in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

The goalkeeper has already rejected one move this summer after newly-promoted Hull City activated his release clause. He opted against a switch.

Portuguese giants Benfica have also made checks on his availability in recent days, adding to the competition for his signature.

Newcastle already bolstered their goalkeeping department, signing Ewen Jaouen in an £18 million deal.

However, the Toons remain keen to recruit another senior option before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle also explored a move for Carl Rushworth, but concerns over his lack of Premier League experience cooled their interest despite positive discussions.

Hornicek is now firmly on the radar, and a deal could progress quickly if all parties decide to move forward.

Elsewhere, Newcastle still have several holes in the squad to plug for manager Eddie Howe beyond the sticks.

The Magpies could use at least two midfield additions, and more reinforcement in attack would not go amiss.
