Newcastle United are aiming to make history on Sunday by winning the Carabao Cup for the first time.

The Magpies have never won the League Cup under any name and are without a major trophy since their FA Cup triumph in 1955. They came close to ending both those unwanted records during the 2022/23 campaign as they finished runners-up in the competition but are desperate to go a step further this time around when they face defending champions and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Eddie Howe has been loyal to his established starting XI this season and is unlikely to throw any curveballs with this weekend's team selection. Bar some defensive absentees, the tried and tested lineup should be named for the showpiece event at Wembley.

Here's how Newcastle will likely turn out for the final.

GK: Martin Dubravka - Dubravka has lost his place to returnee Nick Pope in recent weeks but has been Newcastle's cup goalkeeper this season. An able deputy who has consistently proven himself, he could be rewarded with a starting berth on Sunday.

RB: Kieran Trippier - Trippier's stock has fallen significantly over the past year as Father Time catches up with him, but injuries mean the 34-year-old should be handed a start at Wembley.

CB: Fabian Schar - The Swiss defender scored a crucial 90th-minute equaliser against Liverpool earlier this season but will be more preoccupied with stifling the Reds' insatiable forward unit than getting on the scoresheet this weekend.

CB: Dan Burn - Sven Botman is a notable absentee for Newcastle, with the injury-prone Dutchman sorely missed when unavailable. However, Burn, who received a surprise England call-up this week, has proven himself a fine replacement.

LB: Tino Livramento - Lewis Hall's season-ending injury has come at a difficult time as Newcastle push for Carabao Cup glory and Champions League qualification. It will be Livramento's job to shackle the relentless Mohamed Salah at Wembley.

CM: Bruno Guimaraes - Newcastle's midfield boasts the perfect blend of work ethic and supreme skill, with Guimaraes epitomising both those qualities. He scored the winner in the Monday night victory at West Ham United last time out.

CM: Sandro Tonali - Tonali has proven indispensable since returning from his lengthy suspension and will be keen to claim the second major honour of his career on Sunday.

CM: Joelinton - The indefatigable and tough-tackling Brazilian will certainly leave an impression on Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. He may need to watch his temper on the big stage, though.

RW: Jacob Murphy - Murphy made a brief cameo in the 2022/23 Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester United but has established himself as an undisputed starter since. He will cause the wilting Andy Robertson all manner of issues.

ST: Alexander Isak - If one man is going to single-handedly drag Newcastle to victory on Sunday, then it's Isak. The Swede, who has been linked to Liverpool recently, has managed a combined 27 goals and assists in just 32 games this term.

LW: Harvey Barnes - Anthony Gordon's suspension could prove decisive come the final whistle on Sunday but the Scouser's absence will open the door for the lesser-spotted Barnes. He's capable of a moment of magic, albeit not as consistently as Gordon.
