Newcastle United have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, according to the Chronicle.

Trafford caught Newcastle’s attention during an impressive season in the Championship.

He played a central role as the Clarets clinched a spot in the Premier League, keeping 29 clean sheets in 45 appearances.

He turned heads with his return to form after a poor spell in the top flight, which had critics questioning whether he was ready. The 22-year-old proved his doubters wrong.

Newcastle are hoping to make him their long-term goalkeeper as they prepare for the departure of Martin Dubravka. They could also lose Nick Pope.

The England international has been attracting interest from several clubs, and the Magpies may allow him to leave if they acquire a long-term replacement.

Once they have tied up a move for Trafford, attention will likely turn towards signing a striker to provide competition for Alexander Isak.

The club has been linked with moves for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a free agent following his departure from Everton this summer.

However, his poor scoring record has fans wondering if he is worth the punt.
