Newcastle seal Champions League play-off spot with win over PSV | OneFootball

Newcastle United booked a Champions League last-16 play-off spot with a 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park.

The Magpies took control early, capitalising on PSV errors. Yoane Wissa opened the scoring after eight minutes, finishing calmly after Bruno Guimarães threaded a pass through to Joelinton. It was Wissa’s first Champions League goal.

Newcastle doubled their lead before half-time when Wissa dispossessed Yarek Gasiorowski and set up Anthony Gordon, who scored his sixth goal of the campaign, equalling Alan Shearer’s club record for a single European season.

Harvey Barnes added a third in the 65th minute after a weak header from PSV captain Jerdy Schouten, finishing low from inside the box. The hosts controlled the game despite Bruno Guimarães leaving with an ankle injury.

The win moves Newcastle up to seventh in the group, securing a play-off spot and leaving them with a chance of automatic last-16 qualification if they get a result at Paris St-Germain in their final league-phase match.

PSV fall to 22nd and will need a strong finish to reach the knockout rounds.
