Newcastle United are still interested in signing goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, according to journalist Craig Hope.

They twice came close to signing him before he opted to join Manchester City. He has struggled for opportunities, and Newcastle could look to capitalise.

Nick Pope has been a faithful servant to Newcastle. However, the 34-year-old is declining.

Newcastle signed Aaron Ramsdale on loan, but he will return to Southampton after failing to convince.

Despite limited playing time, Trafford remains highly regarded for his shot-stopping ability and complete skill set.

However, Newcastle are not the only club interested, with Aston Villa, Juventus, and Tottenham Hotspur also linked with Trafford.

The Magpies have other targets on their shortlist, including Brighton & Hove Albion star Bart Verbruggen, RC Lens’ Robin Risser and Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel.

Newcastle must pull out all the stops for Trafford

Newcastle should not hesitate to pursue the ‘terrific‘ Trafford.

Elite goalkeepers are rarely available at this stage of their development, and this is the kind of market opportunity ambitious clubs must seize.

Trafford fits the profile of a modern number one for a team looking to dominate territory. He is composed in possession, proactive off his line, and capable of winning points on his own.

More importantly, the move is about long-term clarity.

Secure Trafford now, and the position is locked down for the next decade, removing a recurring recruitment headache and allowing resources to be directed elsewhere.

With rivals circling, hesitation could prove costly. If Newcastle are serious about success, this is a deal they have to get done.
