Newcastle needed to dig deep after trailing Bayer Leverkusen in their latest Champions League encounter.
The visitors had trailed to a Bruno Guimarães 12th minute own goal before Nick Woltemade won a penalty which saw Anthony Gordon level for Eddie Howe's side.
Gordon's spot kick heroics also etched his name into Magpies' folklore as only their second player to score five or more Champions League goals in a single season.
Alan Shearer continues to hold the distinction for the club's all-time record in Europe's elite club competition after notching six in the 2002/03 campaign.
The former England international also still holds the most goal involvements overall with seven, one away from Gordon's own haul of six.
It's surely on a matter of time before there's a changing of the Geordie guard!
