On Monday, Sky Sports reported (see below) that Newcastle United were in talks with Burnley for the sale of Martin Dubravka.
With Eddie Howe having added Aaron Ramsdale to Nick Pope, the Slovakia international pushed down to third choice.
Martin Dubravka had been in the final six months of his contract in January 2025 when persuaded to extend that to 30 June 2026 with a big pay rise. At that time Nick Pope out injured and Dubravka set to move to the Saudi Pro League.
However, with James Trafford having recently moved to Manchester City, Burnley left needing another goalkeeper.
Now on Wednesday afternoon, Sky Sports reporting an update, stating that Burnley have agreed a permanent deal with Newcastle United for the transfer of Martin Dubravka.
The broadcaster saying that Dubravka is having his medical today (Wednesday 6 August 2025) ahead of finalising the move.
The Mag report – 4 August 2025:
Sky Sports report that Martin Dubravka is set to leave Newcastle United for a Premier League rival.
Dharmesh Sheth states that Newcastle United are in talks with Burnley regarding the 36 year old goalkeeper.
Sky Sports saying talks are progressing and that Martin Dubravka is the primary target for Burnley.
Massive irony of course, as Newcastle United had been trying to sign James Trafford, only for Manchester City to buy him, leading to the need for Martin Dubravka (or another replacement for Trafford).
Martin Dubravka was set to move to the Saudi Pro League in January but was persuaded to stay, as Nick Pope was out injured.
The Slovakian keeper’s contract was due to end on 30 June 2025 but in January a year was added to that, as well as an increase in wages for the Slovakian keeper.
The writing was on the wall with Aaron Ramsdale having arrived, plus Martin Dubravka not taking part in the Far East tour. The goalkeeper has only played 45 minutes at Celtic in the pre-season friendlies and when he didn’t travel to Singapore, Eddie Howe said the plan was for Dubrabvka to join them in South Korea. That never happened and clearly it appears, Martin Dubravka staying in the UK with a move elsewhere the plan.
Rather bizarrely, many journalists and Newcastle fans came to the conclusion that if/when a goalkeeper was signed this summer, then Nick Pope would be the one to move on. Why on earth anybody would have thought that with such a massive season ahead, no way that Eddie Howe was wanting rid of his existing clear first choice keeper.
