Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Ross Wilson as their new sporting director, bringing an end to a meticulous recruitment process following the departure of Paul Mitchell earlier this year, BBC Sport reports. Wilson joins from Nottingham Forest, where he served as chief football officer and played a pivotal role in the club’s transformation from relegation candidates to European contenders.

The 41-year-old Scot arrives at St James’ Park with a reputation for shrewd recruitment and long-term planning, honed through previous roles at Rangers and Southampton. His work at Forest included several astute transfer deals, among them the acquisitions of Anthony Elanga, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Nikola Milenkovic, who was later named the club’s Player of the Season.

It’s an honour to join such a special club,” Wilson said. “The passion, ambition, and expectations of Newcastle’s supporters are clear, and the trust and alignment with Eddie Howe are already strong. Together, we’re committed to pushing this club forward.”

For Newcastle, the appointment marks a move towards greater stability after a turbulent year in the boardroom. Wilson is expected to oversee the Magpies’ medium- to long-term strategy, focusing on squad development, youth integration, and sustainable growth under the ownership of the Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Newcastle sources suggest Wilson had long been admired by PIF, with discussions dating back to his successful spell at Rangers. His arrival will also allow manager Howe to concentrate fully on the pitch, confident that the club’s off-field vision is in safe hands.
