The England midfielder and former Manchester United midfielder now with Marseille.

In the summer Angel Gomes became a free agent and there had been talk of him coming back to the Premier League, however, he stayed in Ligue 1, swapping Lille for Marseille.

The Marseille star has three goals in Ligue 1 this season as his new club sit two points behind PSG in the domestic league table.

After three defeats in four Champions League matches though, they are struggling in Europe.

Angel Gomes has been speaking ahead of Marseille v Newcastle United as quoted by Le Phoceen – 24 November 2025:

How do you analyse Newcastle’s evolution since your time in the Premier League?

Angel Gomes:

“Newcastle United are a special club in England, with a large fanbase.

“St James’ Park is a very nice place to play.

“In the last two years they have taken another step forward, a new stage.

“The team is really very strong now.

“What they’ve built is impressive. I think the last few years have been excellent for Newcastle.”

How do you see the match against Newcastle United, a very intense team, as we saw again against Manchester City?

Angel Gomes:

“Newcastle are a very strong team physically.

“We face this type of team in Ligue 1 as well but they have a lot of quality.

“I know many of the players, I’ve played with and against several of them, so I know it’s difficult.

“But the Velodrome is a special place and in the Champions League it’s even more special.

“So we’ll see how the match goes tomorrow.”

What makes it special, for you as English people, to play against an English club?

Angel Gomes:

“It’s always special for us.

“I don’t think we need to do things differently. We just have to play our game, follow the game plan.

“It’s always good to be at home with the fans at the Velodrome. It’s always a special occasion.

“So I think for us, it’s about playing with the same passion and courage that we’ve shown in previous matches.”

After (the 5-1 win away on Friday against) Nice, is there a risk of euphoria?
