Newcastle United have entered the race to sign AC Milan attacker Christopher Nkunku, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

Nkunku’s time at San Siro is set to end just twelve months after his €37m move from Chelsea. New Milan head coach Ruben Amorim does not see the Frenchman in his plans, leaving him out of recent pre-season squads as the Rossoneri reshape their attack.

With Milan ready to part ways, a host of European clubs are lining up a move, and Newcastle are aiming to position themselves among the frontrunners.

The Magpies have contacted Nkunku’s representatives to explore a deal. Head coach Matthias Jaissle is determined to add pedigree to his attack, with Nkunku offering versatility as a centre forward, supporting striker, or attacking midfielder.

German sides RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are also interested, with Leipzig exploring a reunion with their former talisman, who scored 70 goals and provided 45 assists in four years at the club. There is also reported interest from clubs in Spain and Italy.

Newcastle’s financial resources and the appeal of Premier League football could give them an edge.

Nkunku is keen to secure regular first-team football in a top league to get his career back on track after a difficult year.

Nkunku’s previous spell in England with Chelsea did not go as planned, scoring just six goals in 38 Premier League appearances, though he did win both the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

With talks underway between Newcastle and Nkunku’s representatives, St James’ Park has emerged as a likely destination.

If negotiations progress smoothly in the coming days, the former Chelsea man could seal a return to English football.
