Newcastle United chase eighth straight Burnley win to salvage poor away record

Newcastle United visit Burnley tomorrow, knowing they must win if they are serious about recovering lost ground in the Premier League.

On paper, this looks a favourable opportunity against a Burnley side that have gone weeks without a victory and remain firmly entrenched in the relegation zone.

In reality, it is a fixture that carries its own risks for a Newcastle team that has struggled badly away from home this season.

Burnley arrive at the end of 2025 without a league win since late October, a run that has kept them rooted near the bottom of the table.

Scott Parker’s side endured a brutal spell of defeats through November and early December, leaving survival hopes hanging by a thread.

However, recent draws against Bournemouth and Everton have offered a meaningful lift, particularly after keeping a rare clean sheet last time out.

Those results have not masked Burnley’s attacking problems, with a lack of incision in the final third continuing to undermine otherwise competitive displays.

Newcastle have managed just one league win away from home all season, a statistic that continues to undermine their ambitions.

Eddie Howe’s side arrive at Turf Moor having won only one of their last five Premier League matches, with momentum repeatedly stalling at key moments.

A narrow defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day was another example of Newcastle controlling periods of a game without scoring.

That inconsistency has left them sitting in the lower half of the table, well clear of relegation trouble but uncomfortably distant from the European places they would expect to be chasing.

Despite this, Newcastle will view this match as a necessary stepping stone if they are to claw back lost points over the second half of the season.

However, any sense of comfort would be misplaced. Burnley’s slight uptick in form, combined with Newcastle’s travel sickness, ensures this will not be a straightforward evening.

The hosts know that even a single point could prove valuable in their fight for survival, particularly with confidence slowly returning.

The stakes for Newcastle are different but no less significant. Anything less than a win would be another missed opportunity.
