Newcastle United defender Dan Burn sustained a rib fracture after an injury against Sunderland yesterday, according to the Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.
Newcastle lost 1-0 to the Black Cats in the Tyneside derby and the St James’ Park club also ended up losing a key player.
Burn got injured in a challenge with Sunderland star Nordi Mukiele, whose knee appeared to hit the Englishman on the rib.
While the Magpies star initially carried on after receiving treatment, he went down again and ultimately had to be replaced shortly before half-time.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed after the match that Burn had to be taken to the hospital for an immediate scan as he was struggling to breathe at half-time.
It is safe to say that the 33-year-old has played his last game for 2025, and his injury is a huge blow for the Toons as he had started all but one of their 16 Premier League games so far in 2025-26.
Burn missed the 2-1 win over Manchester City last month due to a one-game suspension he had to serve having picked up five yellow cards.
Sven Botman, who has been nursing a back complaint for a while, could return for their next Premier League game – against Chelsea on December 20.
Being without Burn is a massive blow as he was named in the starting XI in all six of Newcastle’s Champions League games so far this term.
The Magpies are 12th in the Premier League table after 16 games as a result of their sixth defeat of the campaign, and they need significant improvement going forward if they want to qualify for European football next term.
Newcastle have a fair run of fixtures in the coming weeks and will fancy their chances of picking up much-needed points heading into the second half of the season.
