Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants Alexander Isak, but the club accepts that reaching a deal with Newcastle United may prove impossible, according to The Athletic.
Arteta is a massive fan of the Swedish international striker and would love to lure him away from the St James Park club, but Arsenal have all but given up ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is a big boost for Newcastle, as other suitors will likely feel the same way, given the finances expected to be involved in completing a deal.
The Magpies reportedly want around £150 million for Isak, a fee that could prove prohibitive for Arsenal and others.
The fact that his current contract has three more years remaining means there is no urgency to offer him a new deal.
While the 25-year-old wants regular Champions League football, he may have to settle for one of the two other continental competitions next season.
Newcastle have already qualified for the Europa Conference League by winning the Carabao Cup.
They are currently sixth in the Premier League table ahead of the remaining ten games of the season. Finishing in the top four is possible as they will move to fourth if they win their game in hand.
Securing a berth in the elite European competition next season will boost their chances of getting the in-demand striker to extend his contract.
Newcastle need to bolster their squad this summer to establish themselves as regular challengers for major trophies.
The Magpies have what it takes to challenge for the Premier League title if they can sign a few quality players and increase their depth across all positions.
Keeping Isak and other key players will be needed for manager Eddie Howe to continue improving his squad.
