Newcastle United losing to the likes of Brighton…

Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Brighton on Saturday afternoon, as you no doubt know.

I couldn’t get down to the match today but watched the game online.

United started well but lost their way a bit as Brighton played well and dominated the first half.

As the second half developed, Newcastle improved markedly and it was Brighton struggling to cope as the game moved on.

Woltemade scored a fabulous goal and from then on it looked like United set to take all three points. Only for a rare break down the other end and when Dan Burn made an excellent block, the ball falling so sweetly for Welbeck to strike the winner.

I thought the referee was very generous to Brighton and some nonsense free-kicks given against Big Nick, whilst no luck at all either for NUFC when it came to balls falling kindly in and around the box.

After Brighton scored that winner against the run of play, I knew what was coming post-match.

Some way over the top nonsense from the usual suspects.

We all hate Newcastle United losing any match, but at the same time, you factor in various stuff before making your mouth go. Or at least you should.

As well as the other comments I read online that had me shaking my head, there was this one on The Mag in the instant reaction from various contributors. GToon saying ‘…then lost away at teams like mighty Brighton.’

Teams like mighty Brighton…

This is typical of the thinking of many of the daft comments I have read in reaction to today.

Maybe many of these dafties are like me, plenty years on the clock and back in the day they were a nothing club. Indeed,, apart from four seasons in the early 1980s, Brighton were never in the top tier ever, in their entire history.

They looked to be then heading into oblivion, out of existence, with no stadium and what looked to be no club in the end.

Then their sugar daddy Tony Bloom put half a billion in and paid for a new stadium and training complex and paid for the players to get them into the Premier League and then to stay there.

To be fair, he has also hired some excellent people on the football and business side and has been ruthless in selling players to make a profit BUT also then spending a lot.

Indeed, last season, Brighton spent more than any other Premier League club on signings, almost a quarter of a billion!

Yet people talk of ‘mighty Brighton’ to belittle them, or use phrases such as ‘teams like Brighton’, as though they were still that club which back in the day inhabited the second, third and fourth tiers and were a nothing club, a nothing team.

Things change though grandad.

It is like last season when Newcastle lost twice to Bournemouth, many NUFC fans wondering how this could happen. Even when getting a draw this season at Bournemouth, that was reckoned to be a bad result by many even though they have won their other three PL home matches this season and haven’t lost since unlucky on the opening day when losing in late on at Anfield.

Bournemouth and Brighton are good teams now, with rich owners and well run in many ways. They are competitive.

Brighton this season beat Man City at home in the Premier League, they beat them last season at home as well.

Brighton have won against Liverpool at home, two of these past three seasons.

Brighton have won twice and drawn one, in their last four PL visits to Arsenal.

Brighton beat Chelsea home and away on a regular basis, they do it to Man U as well.

Look at the past four seasons how Newcastle and Brighton have done, league position and number of points.

2021/22 Newcastle 11th and 49 points, Brighton 9th and 51 points

2022/23 Newcastle 4th and 71 points, Brighton 6th and 62 points

2023/24 Newcastle 7th and 60 points, Brighton 11th and 48 points

2024/25 Newcastle 5th and 66 points, Brighton 8th and 61 points

Brighton are a top eight club I would say now, based on recent seasons. It isn’t a disgrace to lose to ‘mighty’ Brighton.

Both of our seasons when qualifying for the Champions League, it could easily have been Brighton instead, they just ran out of steam a bit late on.

This season they don’t have any European distractions and with a very good young manager, I reckon they will be top eight or thereabouts again.

Give a little respect.
