Manchester City have been dealt a potential major summer transfer blow after bombshell comments from Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain also interested in signing the Brazilian midfielder ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The 26-year-old had a £100 million release clause last month, and continues to be targeted by a trio of Champions League clubs despite Newcastle having the opportunity to demand a higher transfer fee.

Guimaraes featured in 37 Premier League matches for Newcastle last season and featured in all six UEFA Champions League matches for Eddie Howe’s side, registering 17 direct goal involvements in 50 appearances across all competitions.

The Brazilian has been at St James’ Park since a £40 million move from Lyon in January 2022, and was involved in 15 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season, as the Magpies failed to secure European football for the upcoming campaign.

Newcastle missing out on qualification for all three UEFA competitions had sparked further exit rumours, although the 30-year-old’s midfield partner Joelinton has quashed suggestions that Guimaraes could move away from Tyneside this summer.

Speaking about the future of his Newcastle and Brazilian teammate, Joelinton said: “I think he’s going to stay. He tells me he’s going to come back next week and get ready for the season.

“I hope he stays. I know him, he loves the club as well. He loves the fans, he enjoys his life in Newcastle United. He’s glad to be there for his life as well as football. Newcastle and the club want him to be happy and stay for many years.”

Manchester City have already completed the signing of Brazilian Savinho from ES Troyes this summer, with the forward potentially the only first-team addition to Guardiola’s squad ahead of the new season.

The Sky Blues are also set to retain the services of midfielder James McAtee for the new campaign, with the Englishman having spent the past two seasons at Bramall Lane on loan at Sheffield United.
