Newcastle United to miss out on signing right winger for these two reasons

Ahead of this summer transfer window, it was universally agreed amongst Newcastle United fans, that the major signings would be a right winger and a right footed central defender.

Only six days to go until the window closes and neither have been signed.

So far, Newcastle United have signed two goalkeepers (Ruddy and Vlachodimos), a left back (Hall), a left footed central defender (Kelly), a raw young striker (Osula) and the teenager Miodrag Pivas, who is a defender who can also play defensive midfield but who will initially be part of the under 21 set up.

As well as the expected right sided central defender and right winger, the Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall signings were also essential, at least in my eyes. However, we had known for some months that Hall’s permanent signing had been triggered during his loan time, whilst the fact Kelly arrived as a free agent, seemed to massively dilute the excitement levels when he was confirmed. For me though, Lloyd Kelly was a massive deal that we landed due to Eddie Howe’s relationship with the defender who he paid £13m for as a 20 year old who hadn’t played in the Premier League, arriving at Bournemouth from Championship side Bristol City. If not for the fact he had become out of contract, I think Kelly would have carried a £30m+ valuation.

Anyway, getting two young players to massively boost the left side of the defence options, was essential and very welcome.

Now to those other ‘essentials’ Newcastle United were/are needing…

Well when it comes to the right footed central defender, Newcastle United appear for sure, all in on Marc Guehi. Yes it is dragging on forever but I think this is Crystal Palace very much trying to save face with their supporters due to everything else going on at the club. As well as trying to get every last penny (especially with Chelsea due a large cut of any transfer fee) out of Newcastle, Palace wanting to divert attention away from their main shareholder dumping them to try and buy Everton, losing star play Olise and now Andersen as well, whilst spending next to nothing themselves this window. Palace desperate to push the loss of Marc Guehi right to the back end of this window to make it look as though they did everything to keep him, when in reality they desperately need to sell him this window, as he has repeatedly refused to sign a new contract and his value will fall dramatically if they head to January with only one and a half years left on his Palace contract.

Which brings me to our new right winger, or rather no new right winger, as I see it.

I think two big reasons are going to mean Newcastle United not landing this new right winger in August.

One of those reasons is Marc Guehi.

I believe Newcastle are going to end up paying £10m-£15m more than they had originally hoped to get him for, which then automatically means less money/PSR flex available to pursue other signings, such as a right winger.

The second reason is that as things stand, since those Minteh and Anderson deals in June, there hasn’t been any major outgoing deals. I am especially thinking of the current options on the right side.

Whilst in an ideal world Eddie Howe would like to keep both Almiron and Murphy, even if a new right winger arrived, that isn’t the real world. For a new first choice right winger to arrive, at least one of those would have to be sold.

It is a bit of a strange one for me, as to why so little interest in trying to buy either of them. A bit like many Newcastle United fans, both Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron seem generally undervalued and underappreciated.

Even though they both have regularly played a full part in so many great Newcastle United wins and performances, that hasn’t translated to significant transfer interest/offers.

Almiron is 30 and Murphy 29 but both are super fit and rarely, if ever, missing through injury. I think they could do a very good job for many Premier League clubs, not to mention those abroad.

Anyway, unless a decent offer arrives for either of them, most likely it would be Almiron, then I don’t see any chance of that new right winger appearing, especially taking into account the ever rising Marc Guehi fee.

For example, there is no way Newcastle United are paying big money for a new right winger, then letting say Almiron go on the cheap and/or a generous initial loan arrangement etc.

So my reading of the situation, for what it is worth, is that Newcastle United will buy Marc Guehi BUT not a right winger in this window. I think maybe the only exception to that, would be if there is a right winger out there who could be signed in a similar arrangement to Lewis Hall, a loan for a season and then an all but guaranteed permanent deal and transfer fee to be paid next summer.
