The first UEFA Champions League game of the 2025/26 season for FC Barcelona is coming up soon. This time around, the Catalan giants have traveled to England to face off against a strong opponent from the Premier League.

Newcastle United, an opponent that Barça has not faced in a long time, is already waiting for Hansi Flick’s side at St James’ Park. However, considering that this is an away game as well, this will be a tough challenge for La Blaugrana.

Match Overview:

In terms of recent form and an overall idea of the pedigree of both teams at the moment, recent success has to be looked at. It is already well known that Barça won a domestic treble last season and were just an inch away from reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League as well.

As for Newcastle United, the English side did well last season as well. They managed to secure a fifth-place finish in the Premier League and even managed to win the EFL Cup by beating a strong Liverpool side in the final of the competition.

Despite being a team from pot four, Barça’s opponent is hardly an easy challenger to take on. In fact, they are arguably one of the toughest opponents in terms of quality that the Catalan side will have to face in the competition’s league phase.

In terms of form, however, Barça clearly look like the better team right now. With three wins and one draw in their last four official games, the Catalan giants are yet to lose a game this season and have been scoring goals for fun. Following their recent thrashing of Valencia, Flick’s team has scored 13 goals so far this season.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, have clearly been struggling. Two draws, one loss, and only one win from their last four official games tells a lot. However, they do seem to be much harder to deal with at home, and they will have that big advantage against FC Barcelona.

Unfortunately for the team from Catalonia, star forward Lamine Yamal will not be available for this game due to injury. Moreover, both Gavi and Alejandro Balde will not be there either, meaning that Flick will need to sort out an alternative starting eleven just as he did against Valencia.
