Newcastle’s defence of the Carabao Cup continues with a familiar advantage, another night under the lights at St James’ Park. For Eddie Howe, this competition has become a serious pursuit rather than a distraction, and a quarter-final against Fulham offers a clear route back to Wembley. Having ended decades of frustration by lifting the trophy last season, Newcastle now find themselves expected to behave like holders, with authority and composure.
Fulham arrive with nothing to lose and plenty of recent experience at this stage. They know what it takes to survive knockout football, even if their path here has been less straightforward. Penalties were required to see off Wycombe, but Marco Silva’s side will not be short of belief, particularly with recent away form providing encouragement.
Newcastle’s Carabao Cup campaign has been built on control and patience. Victories over Bradford and Tottenham were not spectacular, but they were efficient, and that is often the currency of knockout football. St James’ Park has once again become a decisive factor, with the crowd amplifying Newcastle’s intensity and making small margins feel larger for visiting teams.
There is, however, a note of caution after a disappointing Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland. That performance may influence Howe’s selection thinking. Rotation would usually be expected with Chelsea looming in the Premier League, yet a strong response is needed. Dan Burn is sidelined with a rib injury, while Kieran Trippier, Emil Krath, William Osula, Nick Pope and Sven Botman remain unavailable. Those absences test Newcastle’s depth, but the core of the side remains intact and motivated.
Fulham’s route to this quarter-final has required resilience rather than fluency. Wins over Bristol City and Cambridge set the tone, before a tense shootout victory against Wycombe underlined their willingness to suffer. They were at this stage as recently as 2023-24, pushing on to the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Liverpool, an experience that still shapes this squad.

The challenge on Tyneside is complicated by absences. Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze are all away at AFCON, removing athleticism and creativity from Silva’s options. Sasa Lukic, Jorge Cuenca and record signing Kevin are expected to fill those gaps, while Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon remain injured. Yoane Wissa could make his first start after being left out of DR Congo’s AFCON squad, offering pace and directness in transition.
Kick-off is at 8.15pm GMT on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, with the match taking place at St James’ Park. UK viewers can watch live on ITV1 and Sky Sports Premier League, with coverage starting from 7.30pm on ITV and 7pm on Sky Sports.
Fulham’s recent away wins in the league add intrigue, but Newcastle remain a different proposition at home, particularly in this competition. Expect a tight contest shaped by discipline and moments rather than volume chances. Newcastle’s experience and crowd support should edge it.
Prediction: Newcastle to win, 2-1.
