West Ham United face a crucial trip to St James’ Park on Sunday evening, fighting to retain top-flight status.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side languish in 18th place, sitting two points adrift of safety behind rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The Hammers must secure a positive result to prevent their relegation fears from materialising before the final weekend.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are mathematically safe from danger after earning a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest last week. Eddie Howe’s side sit 13th in the table but desperately need to improve their defensive consistency.
The Magpies have dropped a league-high 27 points from winning positions throughout this difficult campaign. They have also conceded 20 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches this term.
That said, the hosts remain clinical at St James’ Park, scoring at least twice in 13 home fixtures. West Ham won the reverse fixture 3-1 in November and hunt just their third Premier League double over Newcastle. The visitors previously triumphed 2-0 on Tyneside last season but face an uphill battle to repeat that feat.
Eddie Howe confirmed that Lewis Hall trained fully this week and remains available for selection. However, Joelinton is a fresh doubt after sustaining a minor thigh injury in training. The Brazilian joins long-term absentees Lewis Miley, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento, and Fabian Schär on the sidelines.
Anthony Gordon will likely start from the bench again as Howe looks toward next season. In his absence, Harvey Barnes should earn a recall after netting his 16th goal of the campaign last weekend.
West Ham travel north with a near-fully fit squad at their disposal. Adama Traoré is their only confirmed absentee as he recovers from a quadriceps issue. Callum Wilson provides an alternative option in attack against his former club.
The forward scored twice against Bournemouth in November but may lose out to Taty Castellanos for a starting role. Tomás Souček will feature in midfield, looking for his 50th Premier League goal involvement.
Newcastle have struggled to keep clean sheets lately, recording just one shutout across their last 14 league matches. They have also gained a league-low three points from trailing positions this season. Despite those defensive concerns, Barnes remains a lethal weapon with 21 direct goal involvements this term.
The Hammers have failed to score in each of their last three away league matches. Another blank on Sunday would equal a dismal four-game scoreless away streak, last recorded in 2015. Nuno’s men must rediscover their attacking edge to fuel their desperate survival push.
Newcastle United Predicted XI: Pope; Hall, Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Tonali, Guimaraes; Barnes, Woltemade, Ramsey; Osula
West Ham United Predicted XI: Hermansen; Todibo, Disasi, Mavropanos; Wan-Bissaka, Soucek, Fernandes, Diouf; Bowen, Summerville; Castellanos
The match is broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League, and Sky Sports Ultra HDR. Coverage begins at 17:00 BST ahead of the 17:30 kick-off. Streaming is available via the Sky Go app.
