Newcastle United welcome West Ham to St James’ Park on Sunday, looking to lay foundations for next season.
Eddie Howe’s side secured their mathematical top-flight safety with a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest last time out. The Magpies occupy 13th place but must address their alarming defensive frailties during their final home fixture. No Premier League team has dropped more points from winning positions than Newcastle’s 27 this season.
They have also kept just one clean sheet across their last 14 league outings since March. Howe demands a disciplined performance to avoid consecutive home defeats against the Hammers for the first time since 1998.
Eddie Howe hinted at significant tactical changes, indicating that his selections will focus heavily on plans for next year. Anthony Gordon will likely remain on the bench again as speculation surrounds his long-term future on Tyneside.
In his absence, Harvey Barnes will reclaim a starting spot after taking his tally to 16 goals this term. Barnes has registered 21 direct goal involvements in all competitions during an impressive individual campaign.
Lewis Hall has trained fully and remains available despite picking up a minor knock last weekend. However, midfielder Joelinton is a fresh concern after sustaining a thigh problem during a training session this week.
The Brazilian joins long-term absentees Lewis Miley, Emil Krafth, Tino Livramento, and Fabian Schär on a crowded treatment table. Nick Woltemade and Jacob Ramsey are both pushing for starts in a heavily rotated creative midfield unit. William Osula will spearhead the attack, while Yoane Wissa provides an alternative option from the bench.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Hall, Thiaw, Botman, Burn; Tonali, Guimaraes; Barnes, Woltemade, Ramsey; Osula.
The Premier League match at St James’ Park kicks off at 17:30 BST on Sunday, 17 May 2026.
