The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Newcastle just about squeeze past Wolves with a gritty 1-0 win on Tyneside. The hosts happily grab their first three points of the campaign, while the Old Gold start their season with four straight defeats for the very first time in their history. There was action from the start, as Wolves' new boy Arokodare flicked on a great long ball to Gomes practically from kick-off. Pope had to tip that blazing effort wide of the right post before Hwang's half-volley also required a save from the resulting corner. Three minutes after this, Murphy just curled wide of the top left from distance, before he was then denied from closer range by Johnstone in the 13th minute. The 18th minute saw Schar's brilliant last-ditch lunge deny a certain tap-in for Arokodare, before VAR was called into action at the other end for last-man Mosquera's arm across an advancing Barnes. This was waved away, yet Newcastle remained undeterred as Woltemade scored on his debut with a fine header in the 29th minute. Wolves just couldn't get out of their third, and Murphy's ball was perfect for the 6 ft 6 German. While considerable half-chances nearly added to the score in the first 45, action in the second half was limited to yellow cards and a scrappy midfield battle. Regardless of this, and underperforming their 1.50 xG, Newcastle can now prepare to host Barcelona on Thursday night in the Champions League. Following this performance under their 0.53 xG, Wolves' plight continues. That said, there will be positives they can take from this outing ahead of their next game with newly-promoted Leeds. Thanks for joining us today. Goodbye!

Newcastle restart play with a separate free-kick incident on the left flank. Trippier takes it, and Schar nods back across from the right. Willock then swings a leg at the dropping ball, yet the deflection carries the effort safely back to Johnstone.
