Newcastle United continue to build their squad with a clear focus on stability and gradual renewal. Eddie Howe values reliable figures who understand his tactics, adapt to them and the demands of the Premier League.
They keep exploring fresh additions and consider younger long-term options, but some experienced players still play important roles. The club’s transfer links move in different directions, and Samu Aghehowa will reportedly reject a move to Newcastle United, while the Magpies plan a €70 million bid for Eduardo Camavinga, which shows that planning for the future remains constant. In the middle of all this, a decision involving one of Howe’s trusted defenders sits quietly but importantly in the background.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Newcastle United plan to hold contract renewal talks with Fabian Schär. His current deal expires at the end of the season, but he still influences the team on and off the pitch. The 33-year-old joined from Deportivo de La Coruña in 2018 and has developed into a consistent figure across multiple managers, with his strongest period under Howe.
The Swiss international has featured often this season, displayed sharp defensive reading and has been calm with the ball. Malick Thiaw’s arrival from AC Milan suggested a possible shift in the defensive order, but Schär has remained important for the team.
The club plans for the future and may eventually make a move for someone like Joel Ordonez, but they do not rush to part ways with the Swiss defender. Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth are also nearing the end of their contracts, and they will likely leave. That makes Newcastle’s decision to renew Schär’s contract straightforward. His familiarity with the system and Howe’s methods keeps him valuable at a time when too much change could unsettle the defence.
While speaking about Schar’s future, O’Rourke said, “Newcastle, long-term, are probably going to have to be looking at defensive reinforcements. Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, both 33 now, Schar himself is out of contract in the summer. I’m sure talks are going on over a new deal.
“Then one of the other centre-backs in the squad, Jamaal Lascelles, he’s also out of contract in 2026. I think heading into next season, Newcastle probably will need reinforcements in that back line, and probably that’s why they’re looking at players like Ordonez.”

Newcastle will make a sensible decision by extending Fabian Schär’s contract until 2026. He will still provide defensive depth even if he does not start every match once Thiaw settles. His passing, calm judgment, and leadership will remain useful next season. The extension will show that Newcastle prefer gradual transitions instead of sudden replacements.
Schär’s presence will support Thiaw’s adjustment to English football, giving the younger defender time to progress without pressure. The club will keep a player who feels settled and respected and who continues to contribute on the pitch. The contract will not tie the Magpies to a long commitment. It will certainly leave space for tactical changes and future signings. Hence, it represents good timing, sensible squad planning, and recognition that experience carries value as the team builds forward.
