Newcastle United have been reshaping their squad, building a side that reflects both ambition and balance. Eddie Howe has already brought in new faces across the pitch, but the search for another striker continues.
The Tyneside club want a player who can add variety to their attack, especially after Alexander Isak’s departure. According to Marca via SportWitness, the Magpies have shown interest in Alexander Sorloth and sent scouts to watch him in recent weeks. The Norwegian forward, who plays for Atletico Madrid, caught their attention after he impressed at Villarreal before moving to Madrid in 2024.
Sorloth’s time at Atletico has been mixed. Although he struggled at first, the 29-year-old adapted well and ended his debut campaign with 24 goals and two assists in just over 2,300 minutes. Even so, Julian Alvarez and Alex Baena now keep him out of the starting lineup.
That situation, along with his recent dip in form, has sparked talk about a possible exit. He still has three years on his contract, but his name is already in transfer discussions. Newcastle’s scouts attended the match where he scored in Atletico’s 5-2 derby win over Real Madrid in September, and reports say they admired his performance.
Howe’s staff see him as a potential answer to their attacking needs, especially as the Magpies pursue Scott McTominay and focus on renewing the contracts of Bruno Guimaraes and Valentino Livramento. Everything suggests the club wants a complete and settled squad before the winter window closes.

Sorloth brings a different profile from what Newcastle currently have. His aerial strength, hold-up play, and physical presence make him a traditional centre-forward, something Howe’s team occasionally lack. However, his movement off the ball sometimes slows Newcastle’s fast attacking rhythm.
The team often uses quick combinations between midfield and attack, and that demands a striker who links play, presses high, and stretches defences. Sorloth thrives on crosses and counter-attacks, but Howe prefers forwards who press from the front and create space through sharp runs instead of waiting in the box.
Even so, his finishing and instinct inside the area could help Newcastle, especially against teams that defend deep. Sorloth’s form at Villarreal showed he can perform well in a creative setup if he plays regularly. Still, his fit in Howe’s high-energy system remains uncertain.
He might bring goals, but could disrupt the team’s tempo and pressing rhythm. If Newcastle want variety more than uniformity, Sorloth fits the bill; if they aim for cohesion, his arrival might force a tactical adjustment. The 29-year-old could help, but he might not be the smooth fit Howe truly wants.
