Charlton Athletic Women's number seven was deemed to have been fouled by Demi Stokes just before the hour mark, and she picked herself up to dispatch the penalty and secure all three points.

United dominated possession during the opening exchanges, but they almost found themselves behind when Aoife Mannion was caught in possession on the edge of her box.

That allowed Lucy Fitzgerald to nip in and attempt a delicate chip, but Femke Liefting stood tall and got a good hand to deny the attacker before collecting the rebound.

Jasmine McQuade was a threat through the middle for United, and her dangerous run forward gave Jordan Nobbs apace to get her head up and shoot from 30 yards, but she could only watch on as it sailed over a backpedalling Sophie Whitehouse and her crossbar.

Newcastle's best chance of the first half came via a set piece after 25 minutes when Beth Lumsden's inswinging ball was flicked on by visiting defender Charlotte Newsham, and Mannion met it at the back post, but Whitehouse did well to push the ball onto the bar before Charlton could clear.

The Lasses continued to play good football between the lines, with Morgan Gautrat this time breaking forward and finding Nobbs in space, but again, her curling effort from the edge of the area fizzed over.

Charlton came flying out of the blocks in the second half, and their opening chance came from a Jodie Hutton free kick that evaded everyone and drifted marginally wide of the far post.

It was the hosts who managed to edge in front just before the hour mark when Stokes was alleged to have brought down Bradley in the box.

Bradley slotted the spot kick into the bottom left corner and past Liefting, despite the Dutch youth international diving the right way.

Newcastle's best chance of the second half presented itself after 80 minutes when Mannion managed to recycle a set piece back into the box and found Stokes unmarked, but her first-time volley bounced off the bar and behind.

Despite a lot of possession, Newcastle struggled to create clear-cut chances in the second half; that was until the 100th minute when Emily Murphy squeezed through several Addicks players and found herself one-on-one with the keeper.

However, the Republic of Ireland international was thwarted by Whitehouse at her near post.
