Bruno Guimaraes is expected to miss the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland with a hamstring injury, a major setback for Eddie Howe. According to Sunderland Echo, the Newcastle United captain faces several weeks out.

The midfielder limped off in the closing stages of Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, only his second appearance since returning from an ankle problem.

Howe said after the game that Guimaraes was worried about the issue and that it was not something he had felt before. Subsequent assessment has indicated the problem is more serious than first hoped, leaving him sidelined for a spell.

Newcastle have failed to win any of the 10 Premier League matches Guimaraes has missed since his debut. With him starting, they have a win rate just over 53 per cent, averaging 1.8 points per game, scoring 1.9 goals and conceding 1.2 on average.

Howe must now reshape his midfield for a demanding schedule. Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are available, Joelinton is expected back soon from a groin issue, and Lewis Miley is not thought to face a long absence after a dead leg. Losing such influence before the derby complicates preparations.
