Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United has been a topic of debate since their humiliating 2-1 loss to Sunderland last weekend

After the chastening 7-2 defeat at Barcelona, the Magpies suffered more embarrassment at the hands of their bitter rivals on Sunday.

A stirring second-half comeback saw Chemsdine Talbi level the scores before Brian Brobbey struck a 90th-minute winner to secure a league double for Sunderland over their opponents.

But despite the damaging Tyne-Wear derby defeat, the Geordies continue to support Howe as their head coach, per the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope

The club’s hierarchy are unwilling to make a managerial change with just seven games remaining in the season.

Senior Newcastle figures, including chief executive David Hopkinson, sporting director Ross Wilson and performance director James Bunce, are all united in their backing of Howe.

The 48-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in the history of the Tyneside club.

He saved Newcastle from relegation in his first season, before leading them to Champions League qualification in his second.

After a seventh-place finish in his third season, the team qualified for the Champions League again and also ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup

But Newcastle have endured a difficult campaign in 2025-26. They are sitting 12th in the Premier League after losing 13 of their 31 matches.

The Magpies are out of both domestic cups, while their Champions League journey ended last week after Barcelona sealed an aggregate 8-3 win in their last 16 tie.
