Liverpool were linked with multiple centre-backs in the past two transfer windows as Joel Matip's time at the club came to an end.

One of the names that kept cropping up as a potential successor was RB Salzburg's Oumar Solet.

The 24-year-old was also linked with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United, but no club made a move for his services.

Now, with most transfer windows closed around the world, Solet is back on the market in an unexpected way.

The 24-year-old has been released by Salzburg, who are managed by former Jürgen Klopp assistant Pep Ljnjders.

Solet's contract at RB Salzburg has been terminated by mutual consent and the defender is now a free agent.

Will Liverpool sign free agent Solet?

Although Liverpool were linked with a move in January, with Fabrizio Romano one of the biggest names claiming that the Reds were interested, it appears unlikely that the defender could move to Anfield.

After the January window closed, it was heavily speculated that Liverpool were not impressed with Solet's injury record, especially as the defender had missed 40 games through injury in three-and-a-half years at Salzburg.

Late in the summer transfer window, Stuttgart and Leicester were reported to be interested, while a move to Hoffenheim broke down, and it seems more likely that the promising defender would end up at a club of this stature rather than Liverpool.

With Jarell Quansah showing his ability to deputise at the back in a crisis, the Reds are unlikely to decide to add another defender in the near future, even if they do not have to pay a transfer fee.
