Next slip-up! Neuer becomes a factor of uncertainty for Bayern

Manuel Neuer started the season strongly and was considered the untouchable number one at FC Bayern, but the captain has come under increasing criticism in recent weeks – and provided new reasons for this at the weekend

In the Bundesliga clash against FC St. Pauli, the 39-year-old once again made a serious mistake. Although the Munich side won 3:1 in the end, the 1:0 goal was symptomatic of Neuer’s current form. In a direct duel with Andréas Hountondji, the veteran was beaten in the short corner – a ball that a keeper of his class would normally have to save. This slip-up is part of a series of conspicuous uncertainties that are increasingly raising questions among fans and experts

Neuer had already failed to make a stable impression during the Champions League match against FC Arsenal during the week. He was late for the first goal after a corner. Michael Ballack was critical of the scene: „He wants to block the player himself, gets out of rhythm and loses his timing.“ For the former international, it was clear: „For me, too little for a foul, a normal tackle, not punishable.“

Neuer replied: „The opponent naturally throws me off balance, that’s clear. Then I’m also in a different position than I would have liked and can’t get to the front like that.“

But it didn’t stop at one wobble. When the third goal was conceded, the Bayern captain moved far out of his goal to clear against Martinelli – in vain. The Brazilian skilfully curved around him and scored. „If he goes for the ball, he has to have it, he knows that himself. He decided to take the risk – and is punished,“ judged Ballack. Neuer later explained: „It was already clear to me that there would be a one-on-one situation and a great chance. […] The touch was simply decisive and then I can’t get there, although I knew that I was taking a big risk.“

Increasing pressure from fans and experts

Max Eberl also spoke out after the final whistle: „If he stops on the line, he runs one on one on him and he might still have a chance. He decided to make the run and Martinelli apparently still saw him in the corner of his eye.“

Public criticism increased significantly after the Arsenal game. Fans vented their displeasure on social media. Statements such as „Neuer’s era is over“ or „Manu’s time is up“ became more frequent. Individual voices even called for personnel consequences: „Neuer and Upa on the bench for a few games please, how can you give the opposition two goals like that…“

What makes the situation even more explosive: In the last three games before the St. Pauli game, Bayern conceded seven goals – five of them from set pieces. At least four of these goals were directly or indirectly due to Neuer

Internally, Neuer continues to enjoy full confidence, but with a view to a possible contract extension and Munich’s sporting success, the 39-year-old must rectify his mistakes as quickly as possible.
