Brazil are on alert after Neymar sustained a calf problem that is expected to see him miss the start of the national team’s World Cup preparations. He is a doubt for the 31 May friendly against Panama.

On Sunday 17, during Santos’ 3-0 defeat to Coritiba at the Neo Química Arena, he left the pitch in pain. Scans showed a moderate oedema in his right calf and a reasonable recovery period has been advised. The CBF is not considering a cut at this stage, and, according to O Globo, the situation is causing tension behind the scenes of the five-time world champions.

SporTV reports that two players omitted from the 26 are the priorities should a withdrawal be required, Porto defender Thiago Silva and Flamengo striker Pedro. The Flamengo forward was not called up for the World Cup but could still feature if a teammate is ruled out.

Pedro has another chance to impress at the Maracanã on Wednesday 20, when Flamengo face Estudiantes de La Plata in Group A of the Copa Libertadores. Kick-off is at 21:30 Brasília time, and a standout display could give Carlo Ancelotti something to ponder.

The match will be shown on Globo across Brazil, except in São Paulo and Paraná, and on the Paramount Plus streaming service.
