Neymar has spoken of his emotion after Carlo Ancelotti named him in Brazil’s final 26 for the 2026 World Cup, ending almost three years without an official appearance.
“I feel at home here, it is hard to put the feeling into words. I want to thank everyone. My call-up was not only for me, it was for all of us, everyone was with me on and off the pitch,” he told Santos TV.
“I cried for several hours because it was not easy to get here. After hearing my name, you know it is worth going through it all, enduring the effort and difficulties you helped me with in every way. So, thank you,” he said.
His last competitive game for Brazil was in October 2023 against Uruguay, when he suffered a serious left knee injury that ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
Since then he has faced repeated fitness setbacks and, across club and country, has accumulated more than 800 days out.
After terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, he returned to Santos in January 2025 under a tailored workload. In this second stint he has played 45 competitive matches, scoring 18 goals with nine assists.
Brazil are due to assemble on 27 May at Granja Comary in Teresópolis. Before then, Neymar could still play for Santos, subject to his recovery and the plan agreed between club and the CBF. He has continued training at Santos’ training centre since the call-up.
