Neymar’s brace in Santos’ 2-1 win over Vasco lifted him into the club’s top 10 all-time scorers and fuelled a timely league recovery, moving the side out of the relegation zone.

According to Diario Do Peixe, the upturn followed a turbulent week. Santos exited the Campeonato Paulista in the quarter-finals, faced organised fan protests against the board, and a FIFA transfer ban for non-payment to Arouca in the João Basso deal. The debt was settled on Wednesday 25, allowing the situation to be regularised.

The two goals took Neymar to 152 in 262 games for Santos, alongside 70 assists. In his second spell, the No 10 is under contract until the end of this year. He overtook Tite on 151 and is five behind Pagão, ninth on 157.

During his first stint from 2009 to 2013, he scored 138 in 230 appearances. He won six trophies, three Campeonatos Paulistas, the Copa do Brasil, the Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana.

This year he started late after left knee meniscus surgery on 22 December, missing the first 10 matches. He came on in the second half against Velo Clube, then played 90 minutes versus Novorizontino and Vasco. Last season he made 30 appearances and scored 12.
