Neymar responded after Santos were knocked out of the Campeonato Paulista, posting a brief motivational message on social media. The player said in a post that “Fé e seguir trabalhando”.

Santos lost 2-1 to Novorizontino in the quarter-finals on Sunday, ending their run in the state championship.

It was his first 90-minute outing since surgery on his left knee at the end of December.

The exit cut a buffer of three fixtures he could have used to press his case before Carlo Ancelotti names Brazil’s squad on 16 March. Now only three games remain before then, against Vasco at home, Mirassol away and Corinthians at Vila Belmiro, all in the Campeonato Brasileiro. Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana debuts will come only after that date.

Last year he endured physical problems that limited him to 28 of the club’s 54 matches, leaving him out of Ancelotti’s lists. Ancelotti will only select him if he returns to peak physical condition, which has not yet happened.

Neymar is expected to start against Vasco in the fourth round on Thursday at 19:00 Brasília time at Vila Belmiro. Santos are 18th with one point.
