Neymar returned to Santos on Friday 17 after the World Cup, beginning his reintegration with work in the CT Rei Pelé gym. He also underwent physiological tests as the club assess his condition.

According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos will set a tailored programme for the number 10, who is expected to build up before being considered for selection, and he intends to see out his contract until the end of the year, having told friends he cannot abandon the club and his team-mates now.

At the tournament, he featured only briefly. He came on late in the 3-0 win over Scotland in the group stage, then again in the 2-1 last-16 defeat to Norway, scoring Brazil’s goal from the penalty spot.

After the elimination, he took a short break with family. He travelled to Orlando to celebrate his daughter Mel’s first birthday, then to Las Vegas, where he played a poker tournament and spent time with his wife Bruna Biancardi and friends.

With Santos battling relegation and enduring financial strain, he returns amid hopes he can help in the run-in. His wife’s pregnancy has also been considered, with a stay until December keeping the family on the coast, where they are already settled, for the final stage of the pregnancy.
