Neymar opened his season account for Santos against Vasco de Gama on Thursday, celebrating in front of opposition fans with a corner-flag dance in support of Vinicius. L'Équipe reports that the forward has been back from injury since mid-February.
The night also brought early flashpoints with Thiago Mendes, who injured him in a PSG-OL match in December 2020. The pair squared up, Neymar went down a second after a slight head movement from his opponent, and both were booked.
He went on to score a second, the Santos No 10 completing his brace by the hour.
The celebration mirrored Vinicius’s in Lisbon for Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off first leg against Benfica, a 1-0 win. Vinicius says he was racially abused by Gianluca Prestianni, a claim the Benfica player denies. UEFA has opened an investigation.
In the meantime, Prestianni was suspended for the return at the Bernabeu, which Real Madrid won 2-1 on Wednesday night.
At half-time, Neymar insulted Mendes and said the midfielder had promised to injure him again.
