Nick Woltemade says he plays differently to past Newcastle United strikers as he continues his fine form in front of goal.
The Germany international was on the scoresheet again to help the Magpies beat Tottenham Hotspur and reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday evening.
Woltemade headed the ball home in the second half to double the host’s lead, risking a punch to the cranium as he beat goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to a cross from a corner. Fabian Schar had put them ahead earlier on in the match.
The centre-forward has now scored seven goals in his first ten appearance since joining Newcastle from Stuttgart in a deal worth £69 million this past summer.
Woltemade said after the game that he’s a different kind of striker to what the club have been used to, explaining that he prefers to have the ball at his feet rather than simply head or run onto it.
“Joe [Willock] had the ball and I wanted to go behind the centre back and luckily the goalkeeper was coming out, so I just had to head it in,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think I play different from the other strikers they had here. I think the team after every game get to know me better. I just want the ball at my feet most of the time but I can help the team and if we all come into it I think we can get really good results.
“This team is so easy for me to come here, new country, a new language, I feel welcome here even from the first day everyone was talking to me.
“I think we all have a good connection which makes it easier for me and even for the other new players.”
Newcastle will host Fulham in the next round.
