Former Real Madrid star Nico Paz has this week provided an insight into the reasoning behind his decision to knock back the chance to rejoin the Spanish heavyweights over the summer.

Attacking midfielder Paz of course took his place front and centre in the media chatter in Spain’s capital heading into this past summer’s transfer window.

This came amid the widespread expectation that, after a spectacular season in Italy with Como, Real Madrid were set to activate their buyback clause on the Argentine.

In the end, however, the saga ended with Paz staying put in Serie A, as part of a new big-money agreement.

And as alluded to above, the 22-year-old has since opened up on the key factor behind his call not to take his talents back to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Speaking to the media after playing a starring role in Como’s first-ever Champions League victory on Thursday night, in quotes cited by Diario AS, Paz explained:

“I thought this was where I would grow the most. I think I made the right decision and I’m glad I did.”
