Nico Williams returned for Spain two weeks after his injury against Uruguay, coming on late as they chased a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

The Athletic winger entered shortly before the 80th minute with the game level and Spain seeking a second goal. Moments later, Mikel Merino scored, with Williams close by, to send Spain through.

The player said in a post that it was one of the worst days of his life, hurt by another setback in a season disrupted by pubis problems and pubalgia.

His diagnosis, a muscular injury to the right adductor, was not as serious as first feared. Early concerns eased over the following days.

He was available for the last 16 against Portugal but did not feature. The quarter-final brought his return from the bench.
