Nico Williams has withdrawn from Spain’s camp and returned to Bilbao with a left thigh injury.
Athletic said in a statement that he has a moderate muscle injury to the left rectus femoris, which could sideline him for around a month, meaning he might be back for the 28 October cup tie or the derby against Real.
Williams started in England but was replaced shortly after the interval by Luis de la Fuente. Against Croatia in Seville, he came on in the second half and scored the game’s final goal.
He felt discomfort after the match against Croatia in Seville. His progress was monitored on the rest day and, with the pain persisting, he did not train on Thursday.
Following tests carried out today by federation doctors, he was released from the current squad to continue his recovery. Athletic’s medical staff have been kept informed and will oversee his treatment.
