Nico Williams has entrusted his recovery from pubalgia to Jurdan Mendigutxia, pausing his activity while he follows a personalised plan at his centre in Barañain, near Pamplona.

According to as.com, after consulting external specialists and Lezama’s medical staff, the Athletic winger has returned to Mendigutxia, whom he had seen before, close to his Rotxapea neighbourhood, aiming to feel like a footballer again. He did not travel for Sunday’s win at Real Oviedo, and Ernesto Valverde’s frustration was evident after the match at El Tartiere.

Mendigutxia straightened out Oihan Sancet’s pubalgia three summers ago without surgery, using a tailored summer programme to prevent a recurrence of osteitis pubis.

Mendigutxia heads the Zentrum clinic in Pamplona. He worked for Athletic in 2009 under president Fernando García Macua, worked for the University of Barcelona and collaborates with Real Sociedad, alongside his private practice.

Athletic players such as Iker Muniain, after cruciate ligament operations, Ander Herrera and Adama Boiro have used his services, as has pelotari Joseba Ezkurdia. He is widely recognised in Spain and has published research in leading journals.

Williams will undergo intensive treatment in Barañain over the coming weeks, with no set date to rejoin Lezama, and he will miss Valverde’s next squads. The Copa semi-final at Anoeta on 4 March could serve as a measure of his progress. The World Cup lies ahead, but first he must be at full tilt for Athletic.
