Borussia Mönchengladbach's 2-1 DfB-Pokal defeat to St. Pauli was a difficult pill to swallow for Moritz Nicolas after the game.

'"We’re all very disappointed because we were desperate to reach the next round. I can’t say exactly what the problem was.

"We went behind in the first half in slightly unfortunate fashion. After the restart, we were more proactive and more in the game, which makes the defeat even more painful,” he added.

Gladbach's head coach Eugen Polanski also weighed in on the loss and felt his team “never really got going” in the first half.

"We moved the ball far too slowly and could have fallen behind earlier. At half time, we set out to put more pressure on the opposition. We did that with the equaliser.

"After that, we were in the game, but we still never really got into the positions needed to pin the opponent back in the final third for longer spells. The match just drifted along.

“Then we made a decisive mistake that led to their winner. We’re very disappointed to be out of the cup, but we now have to look forward as quickly as possible,” Polanski explained.

The Rhinelanders will now turn their attention back to Bundesliga duty and tricky away trip to face Mainz 05 on Friday, 5 December.
